Muscle strength and functionality in patients with breast câncer

Abstract

 Breast cancer causes physical, social and emotional changes, and is among the most prevalent in women. This article aims to highlight the impact of the pathology on muscle strength and functional capacity of patients. The research consists of a bibliographic review of articles published in the last five years. The databases Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde, LILACS, Medline, PubMed, and Portal Capes were used. The descriptors searched were "Breast cancer", "Muscle strength", also, in Latin American databases, "Breast cancer", "Functional capacity" and "Muscle strength" were used. It is considered that surgical intervention is the main modality of cure for solid cancers, in which physical declines due to treatment modalities, in addition to the pathophysiology of the disease course, are responsible for affecting the functionality and the degree of muscle strength of those affected. However, the physiotherapeutic intervention acts to minimize the weaknesses, especially sarcopenia and improve the well-being and quality of life of patients.
